Pregnancy is a time of transformation — physically, emotionally, and mentally. And while you're doing the amazing work of growing new life, it's just as important to take care of yourself. This International Self-Care Day (July 24th), we’re focusing on one of the most empowering forms of self-care for expectant mums: staying active.
Yes, You Can Keep Moving
If you were active before pregnancy, the good news is you can usually continue — with some smart, safe tweaks. Whether it was yoga, swimming, walking or strength training, movement doesn’t have to stop just because you’re expecting.
In fact, the NHS recommends regular exercise during pregnancy, as it’s been shown to:
-
Ease common aches and pains
-
Boost energy and mood
-
Improve posture and circulation
-
Help with sleep
-
Prepare your body for labour and childbirth
Staying strong and flexible can help you cope with the physical demands of childbirth — and may even lead to a quicker recovery.
Mindful Movement is Key
That said, pregnancy does come with some important physical changes, which means being mindful of what your body needs now.
Here are a few things to remember:
-
❌ Avoid lying on your back after the first trimester, as it can reduce blood flow to the baby
-
❌ Skip contact sports or exercises with a high risk of falling (think horse riding or skiing)
-
✅ Focus on low-impact activities, like walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, or Pilates
-
✅ Always warm up, cool down, and stay hydrated
-
✅ Speak to a midwife, GP, qualified anti/post natal personal trainer before starting or continuing any exercise plan
Listening to professional advice can give you confidence and reassurance, especially as your pregnancy progresses.
Movement = Self-Care
On International Self-Care Day, we’re reminded that caring for yourself isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. And staying active is one of the most powerful self-care tools you have.
Whether it’s a gentle stretch in your KUB nursery, a walk in the park, or following a prenatal fitness video at home, movement helps you feel strong, centred and in tune with your body.
Make It a Ritual You Love
Try pairing exercise with small moments of joy:
-
Light stretches in the nursery before bed
-
Walking with a friend or listening to an uplifting podcast
-
Setting up a calm space in your home for gentle movement
Creating a supportive environment — like a peaceful nursery space — makes it easier to stay active and intentional.
This July 24th, celebrate the strength of your body.
