One of the joys of your baby’s first year is watching them grow, change, and hit exciting milestones. Rolling over, sitting up, and crawling are some of the big ones - but it’s important to remember: every baby develops at their own pace.
This month-by-month guide gives you a general idea of when most babies reach these milestones, along with tips to support their development safely.
Months 1–3: Building Strength
In the early weeks, your baby is all about gaining head and neck control. During tummy time, they’ll begin to lift their head and strengthen the muscles they’ll later use to roll and sit.
💡 Tip: Place your baby on a safe, flat surface for short tummy time sessions each day. It’s one of the best ways to help them build strength.
Months 4–6: Rolling Over
Around 4 months, many babies start rolling from tummy to back. By 6 months, some may roll both ways. This is the first sign of independent movement!
💡 Tip: Never leave your baby unattended on high surfaces (like changing units) once they begin rolling. Always use safety straps where provided.
Months 5–7: Sitting with Support
Most babies can sit with support around 5–6 months, and many sit unaided by 7–8 months. At first, they may topple over, but they’ll soon master their balance.
💡 Tip: Surround your baby with soft cushions during practice. A supportive highchair is also great once they’re ready to sit up for mealtimes.
Months 7–10: Crawling
Some babies begin crawling at 7 months, while others wait until closer to 10 months. Styles vary — from the classic crawl to bum-shuffling or commando-style wriggling. Some even skip crawling and move straight to walking!
💡 Tip: Give your baby plenty of floor time in a safe, open space. Remove hazards and keep the nursery clear of sharp corners or small objects.
Months 9–12: Pulling Up & Cruising
By the end of the first year, many babies pull themselves up to stand and “cruise” along furniture. It’s the exciting prelude to those all-important first steps.
💡 Tip: Choose sturdy nursery furniture that’s designed with safety in mind, like our KUB cot beds — so you can be confident as your baby explores.
